10 - 11 June : Canal City

Gondolas & Dead End Streets

Trippin'.
No matter how many dead ends you run into, how many canals you cross, you'll never tire of Venice's charm.
We arrived extremely early, checked our luggage into a locker at the train station and dragged ourselves out to the city of canals. Knowing we would not be able to check into our apartment yet, we were left to wander the city. Luckily we stumbled upon a small cafe and decided to have some traditional cappuccino and bisccotti-- very
Italian of us. Still moseying around, we picked up a meringue along with some sandwiches and had lunch on the steps of a church. Finally it's check in time! We trekked back to the train station, got our bags and boarded the waterbus to our designated stop. This was an interesting way to experience a different mode of transportation; cheap too!

Check out the view from our apartment window! And.. gondolas come through often-- very Venetian.

With the twisted narrow pathways leading nowhere, it's a challenge to get anywhere in one shot. Maps are unreliable and not even the locals can point us to the right direction. Most streets are not even named! Street signs mean nothing here. But, after a few dead ends, we've arrived! Apparently the owners of the apartment live somewhere across town and had to send their daughter to open the apartment for us. We were able to use the telephone from restaurant below the apartment to call a couple times to check status. We sat and waited patiently for a good hour. Now can we check in? What a morning!
We had a typical tourist day in Venice-- chasing pigeons in Saint Mark's Square, souvenir shopping and mostly getting lost. And I must say, if ever we could choose to get lost and be lost, this is the place. While around Saint Mark's Square, we stumbled upon the famous Harry's Bar and had every intention to come back for dinner. Of course, we got lost and couldn't find our way back so we settled for what, as I look back now, is quite a boring dinner; lasagna and spaghetti. Nevertheless, how many of you can say you've had spaghetti in Venice?!
